How Smoke Behaves
A unique property of smoke is that it is driven or let us say moved along due to air currents. This moving air current is caused by the increasing pressurized heat building up as a fire increases in volume.
Heat from a fire increases air pressure in a contained area. Think of and hot air balloon. As the hot air fills the cavity of the balloon the balloon expands due to the pressure building up inside. As this hot air expands in a closed room it tries to find a way of escape. So where can it go? It seeps into every nook cranny, crack and opening in walls, floors and ceilings. Like electrical outlets, wall switches, ceiling light fixture boxes, cracks where the baseboard meets the floor. All of these cavities behind the walls surface suddenly become filled with hot pressurized smoke and there it stays – trapped in your walls. If you only seal and paint the wall surface on that first hot day of summer those horrible smoke smell will reenter those rooms using the same nooks crannies, cracks and openings.
